How SimBuddy ranks every deal.
Each deal gets a SimBuddy score out of 100, computed from 8 objective factors. Weightings adjust for whether you’re browsing domestic plans, travel eSIMs or in-store starter packs. Affiliate commissions are never a factor. Every deal card can be expanded to see the exact breakdown behind its score.
The 8 factors (domestic weighting shown)
Value ($ per GB)
35%Lower is better. Log-scaled so a single cheap outlier can't dominate.
Coverage
25%ACCC population coverage. Telstra 5/5 · Optus 4/5 · Vodafone 3/5. MVNOs inherit their host.
Data allowance
15%More GB = more score, capped at 200GB so unlimited plans don't run away with the axis.
Affordability
10%Absolute price. Complements $/GB — some users have a hard monthly ceiling.
Speed tier (5G)
8%5G scores 1.0, 4G scores 0.6. Unknown is neutral.
Extras
5%Personal hotspot + international calls. Each worth half.
Freshness
2%How recently SimBuddy verified the deal is live and priced correctly.
Duration fit
0%Travel only (20%): how close the plan length matches your trip length.
Travel eSIMs reallocate 20% to Duration Fit (how close the plan matches your trip length). Starter packs put 15% on Freshness (in-store availability).

Plan basics
Prepaid vs Postpaid — which suits you?
Every Australian mobile plan falls into one of two billing types. Understanding the trade-offs saves money and stress — your usage pattern matters more than the price on the sticker.
Pay before you use
Prepaid
You buy a set bucket of data + calls upfront, valid for a fixed window (usually 28 or 365 days). No credit check, no lock-in — when the credit runs out you either recharge or move on. Australia is one of the largest prepaid mobile markets in the world.
Pros
Zero commitment
Cancel or switch any time — no exit fees, no contracts.
Predictable cost
You know the monthly bill before it hits your account.
No credit check
Great for travellers, teens, casual users, or anyone rebuilding credit.
Cheapest entry point
Prepaid deals under $20/month exist across every network.
Cons
Manual recharge required
Auto-recharge is available but many users still get caught with 0 credit at the worst moment.
Fewer perks
Streaming bundles (Netflix, Optus Sport) are usually postpaid-only.
No handset payment plans
Prepaid = SIM-only. Buy your phone separately or outright.
Pay after you use
Postpaid
You use first and pay at the end of the month — a rolling arrangement. Postpaid plans in Australia are typically 'month-to-month' now (no 12/24-month lock-in) unless you bundle a handset. Ideal if you want extras, streaming perks, or a phone on payments.
Pros
Perk-rich plans
Free streaming, unlimited data, roaming inclusions — postpaid gets all the shiny extras first.
Handset finance available
$0 upfront + monthly payments on the latest iPhone / Samsung is a postpaid-only trick.
Never 'run out'
Data caps typically slow you down instead of cutting you off — hard to be caught short.
Priority support
Postpaid customers usually get faster carrier support and a real account manager.
Cons
Credit check required
Denied applicants have to go prepaid. Impacts your credit file if you default.
Bill surprises
Excess-usage charges, roaming, calls to premium numbers — all easy to trip over.
Harder to cancel mid-cycle
You'll pay to the end of the billing month even if you leave day 1.
Lock-in for handset plans
Bundle a phone and you're on the hook for 24-36 months of payments.
How SimBuddy ranks plans
How we rank Australian mobile plans
SimBuddy compares every major Australian telco and MVNO on the same six-signal formula: price per gigabyte, unlimited-vs-capped fit, network partner reputation, extras (roaming, entertainment, family lines), contract flexibility, and refund policy. Rankings are recalculated weekly so short-term promotions never distort the long-term picture.
Plans are grouped by billing model (prepaid, postpaid, month-to-month, contract) so you can compare like-for-like — a $30 prepaid never appears above a $30 postpaid in the same rung unless the value calculation supports it.
We're transparent about commercial relationships. Some providers pay SimBuddy an affiliate commission when you click a partner link, but that never changes their rank — the same score is calculated whether a provider pays us or not. If a tie occurs, providers with a partner integration surface first only because we can confirm their price and stock are live in real time.
- Prices shown in AUD, data in GB, validity in days — no marketing units, no bundled decoys.
- Every provider tile links straight to the source purchase page — no interstitials, no data resale.
- Weekly verification sweep auto-deactivates plans whose landing URL 404s or whose price has moved by more than 20%.
